The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is a non-profit trade association offering wide range of certifications in the field of IT. CompTIA certification programs are divided into four categories: basic, specialty, professional, and mastery series.

Exams falling into each of the categories cover different skills and areas of expertise. These range from entry-level certifications suitable for candidates with little or no experience or those changing careers to IT, to expert-level programs designed for experienced IT professionals with advanced knowledge and skills.

CompTIA A+ Certification Exam Overview

The A+ 2009 edition exam (which is one of the two available releases of the A+ exam) consists of two separate tests: CompTIA A+ Essentials (exam code: 220-701) and CompTIA A+ Practical Application (exam code: 220-702).

CompTIA A+ Essentials tests on basic concepts related to computer hardware, operating systems (this is almost exclusively Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / and since January 2011 also Windows 7), software, basic networking, security, operational procedures, and customer service. A+ Practical Application concentrates more on troubleshooting scenarios and tools for solving problems.

CompTIA A+ Practice Test Questions (Exams 220-701 & 220-702)

CompTIA Network+ Certification Exam

The current version of the CompTIA Network+ exam (based on the 2011 objectives and coded N10-005) was released on December 1, 2011.

Network+ N10-005 exam covers five domains: network concepts (21%), network installation and configuration (23%), network media and topologies (17%), network management (20%), and network security (19%). Previous release of the exam (based on the 2009 objectives and coded N10-004) retired on August 31, 2012.

CompTIA Security+ Certification

The current version of the CompTIA Security+ exam is based on the 2010 objectives and labeled SY0-301. This new exam was launched in May 2011. Exact retirement date for the SY0-301 exam is not available yet, but according to the CompTIA's customer support the SY0-301 certification exam should be available for approximately three years from its release date. Previous release of the Security+ exam (based on the 2008 objectives and labeled SY0-201) retired on December 31, 2011.

CompTIA Server+ Certification

The latest version of the Server+ exam (2009 Edition) is coded SK0-003. Previous exam version, CompTIA Server+ 2004 (SK0-002) retired in December 2010 and is no longer available. Retirement date for the current release of the exam in not yet known but according to CompTIA's customer support the SK0-003 exam should be available till approximately 2013.

CompTIA Storage+ Certification (Powered by SNIA)

CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA is a vendor-neutral certification program validating the skills required of professionals working in the IT Storage industry. CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA incorporates the global certification development and management capabilities of CompTIA with the insight and technical leadership of the SNIA providing a credential that is widely recognized as the standard for validating skills and knowledge required in data storage management.

CompTIA Linux+ Certification (powered by LPI)

The latest CompTIA Linux+ (Powered by LPI) exam consists of two tests, coded LX0-101 and LX0-102. Each of the two is made of 60 questions and has a passing score of 500 points on a 200-800 scale. The time limit for completion of each of the exams is 90 minutes.

Due to mutual agreements between CompTIA, Linux Professional Institute (LPI), and Novell, at the time of taking the exam it is possible to choose whether to pass CompTIA Linux+ exam results to the Linux Professional Institute (and at no cost automatically become LPIC-1 certified). The LPI credentials can be passed to Novell in order to be able to apply (again at no cost) for the Novell Certified Linux Administrator (NCLA) Certification.
