The actual A+ certification exam consists of two separate, computer-based tests; candidates are required to pass both to obtain the A+ certification. This can be done in any order and each of the exams can be taken at a different date, but tests must come from the same set of objectives and must be taken before the entire exam retirement date.

The CompTIA A+ Essentials exam tests on basic concepts related to computer hardware, operating systems, software, basic networking, security, operational procedures, and customer service. A+ Practical Application concentrates more on troubleshooting scenarios and tools for solving problems.

CompTIA A+ 220-701 and 220-702 exams are based on the 2009 set of exam objectives. Both tests are scheduled to retire on August 31, 2013. The new version of the A+ exam (based on the 2011 objectives) was released on October 9, 2012. The new A+ exam also consists of two separate tests (coded 220-801 & 220-802).

At this point there are two versions of the A+ exam - according to the CompTIA support knowledgebase those candidates who have already started their A+ training based on the 2009 objectives are encouraged to continue their studies and to test on the 701 and 702 exams.

Lifetime certification scheme and A+ bridge exams were dropped with the end of December 2010 and are no longer available. From January 1, 2011, CompTIA A+ certification gets the CE (Continuing Education) suffix.

In order to remain valid, the A+ certification must be renewed within three years from the date the candidate is certified (those certified on or before December 31, 2010 are still considered certified for life). Certification renewal requires either retaking the newer release of the A+ exam or fulfilling some of the requirements from the Continuing Education program.
